The Traps Of Cultural Appropriation

Yes. Bin it. Because, like it or not, the idea of cultural appropriation — as it stands — is a problem, an extreme for an extreme. Like it or not, it’s one of the reasons Trump and Brexit and so many extremists are enjoying a resurgence. The proof is in the pudding, and in the popularity and success of jingoist madness. The smoke and fire and most importantly fuel that feeds it. Ignore the signs at your peril. Double down on the extreme, unsound and twisted versions of cultural ELF (equality, liberty, fraternity) and ELF loses. We all lose, to the delight of oppressors.

It happened in France in the late 1700s. It was a rough time for everyone including the enlightenment ideas on which the revolution was based. It was the age of reason, but reason didn’t fare well during that time. The backlash from progressive ideas gone mad replaced tyranny with tyranny, the result of which was an oppressive republic, the answer to which was the restoration of the monarchy, leading to a century of civil conflict.

Think about it. Progress deserves better than that.
