Haboob: a type of intense sandstorm. – Wikipedia

Haboobs look awesome and terrifying at the same time. They’re capable of great damage, causing damage to paint jobs and machines, vegetation and infrastructure, soiling homes and shutting down city traffic.

Their stature is almost mythical, which is why they’ve become a Hollywood staple. We see plenty of them on the silver screen, in films like The Mummy and Hidalgo, for example, where they’re made out look lethal, but most times they’re manageable.

Phoenix, Arizona, is no stranger to them.

It was hit by a massive one on July 5.
