‘Does evil come from within us? Or from beyond?’
A horror tale for the ages, with an esthetic that echoes with folk-driven anxieties and apocalyptic fright, this film will be one hell of a hit.
It will also be one of the platforms through which we may start processing the brave new world we live in, so that we may deal with them functionally, in a civilized manner — as art intends us to do — rather than externalize them through politics and bad business.
Let this and other horror tales help us process the darkness that surrounds us. We have plenty to cover in the coming years. We can’t afford to flinch. We have to stare it down as it approaches, whatever it is, and face it off. No other way around it. And this kind of storytelling, among others, some of them brighter and altogether different in nature and approach, will prepare us.
It takes all sorts. Always.
