Some (many) people live their lives in a way that leads to this image. Or have no problem with this scenario. Or simply don’t believe it’s going to come to this, not even when it’s happening in real time. They see, they feel, but they refuse to acknowledge.
Some people — too many for future comfort — just don’t get it. They turn the other way and wax conspiratorial about whatever fits their obsessions and prejudices (they love to pre-judge), ranging from pepperoni pizza drizzled with fresh-grown baby fat, to adrenochrome enemas and unicorn Botox, Q Anon, fluoride water and David Icke, to the flat earth society, the Big Lie, and the theory that we’re living in the 1300s because historians have somehow wiped a bunch of centuries from the records — I mean it goes on and on. Everyone has a theory about something groundbreaking, and no doubt a few conspiracy theories point to something (yes, there was a syphilis experiment on human subjects, and it was covered up; yes, Hitler really did wipe out millions of Jews — a proposition that in 1942 sounded ludicrous)..
But! — the all-important ‘but’ — a few correct theories in a gazillion trashy ones aren’t exactly good odds. Every broken clock is correct twice a day and wrong 1438 (times a day).
I wouldn’t rely on a broken clock, not even if they paid me.
Yes, the world is steeped in problems, some of them fatal, and it would be sapient to pay attention to what destroys us. Poverty, famine, corruption that squeezes the life juice out of billions of people, it’s all real, and we better be angry about it, but — BUT — not at the expense of clarity.
Here’s the one thing we can’t deny: the pollutants spread, seeping across our planet at nature’s — and our — expense. That much is clear.
If we have the vision to make places like Mars habitable we most certainly have the capacity to make Earth fully functional again
What is also crystal, unicorn-distillation clear is that our paradigm is broke(n). This is not going to end well. No God or creed can ever undo the mess. Only we can, by acknowledging the problem and taking steps to fix it, one step at a time.
Like a wise person said, If we have the vision to make places like Mars habitable we most certainly have the capacity to make Earth fully functional again.
Do that, and then, having restored this paradise, we can take our experience and go make more of them out there.
In the meantime, let’s hold our breath and put our faith in things that matter rather than in any given lunatic theory. Our resources, material and psychological, are finite. It would be healthy to use them wisely.
