Bill O’Reilly: Spot On About Christmas
I hate to admit it, but for once I agree with Bill O’Reilly. His latest rant exposes the idiocy of non-religious groups that try to remove christianity from Christmas, and bar his usual approach (FOX NEWS journalism with all the slime that oozes from it) he makes a good argument. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and all that he entails.
This isn’t to say that atheists, agnostics (like myself) or non-Christians who want to celebrate this time of year without paying homage to God, Jesus, or any Christian derivates, shouldn’t be allowed to do so. Indeed, I feel quite the opposite. Christmas is also a cultural celebration. You don’t have to go to Church and know the scriptures by heart to be part of it.
However, I do feel strongly about forcing Christians to dumb down their lingo around their own holiday.
The fact remains. Our non-denominational way of celebrating this time of year is a derivation of Christmas. The holiday is first and foremost Christmas!
Dumbing Down Christmas
Let me be the first to say that I’m sick to death of organized religion’s righteous claim to morality and the world’s salvation. However, as an agnostic, I hardly feel we can be holier-than-thou and force our non-secular views on others because it’s “our holiday-period too”. We are guests on this holiday, not the other way round.
Christmas is Christmas, just as Hanukkah is Hanukkah, Ramadan is Ramadan, and the Chinese New Year is the Chinese New Year, not some I’m-not-Chinese-but-I-still-want-to-celebrate-it-so-let’s-call-it-the-Exotic-Animal-Celebration-With-Firecrackers-to-make-it-more-inclusive Year.
If people want a secular, non-denominational holiday, they can get off Christmas’s back and create a new one, like Festivus. (See Seinfeld for more details.)
Until then, Merry fucking Christmas!
